FERRIES
Pentland Ferries was set up to run as an alternative link between mainland
Scotland and Orkney, operating in competition to the established (then) P&O
service and latterly the Northlink Ferries service from Scrabster to
Stromness. The former CalMac ferry Iona was purchased in 1997 and renamed
Pentalina B. Subsequently another former CalMac ferry, the well-travelled
Claymore, was purchased to run as the 2nd vessel.
The crossing itself takes between 60 and 75 minutes depending on the route
the vessel takes and the conditions in the Pentland Firth. The company is
currently awaiting the delivery of their new catamaran which is anticipated
during the spring of 2008. It is expected that this will render the
Pentalina B surplus to requirements and relegate the Claymore to spare
vessel, available for charter for 9 months of the year. |
