From the Shipyard: On the 24th of May, we celebrated two milestones for NB1093&NB1100 CMAL ferries; steel cut for the third vessel and keel laid for the second vessel Loch Indaal, the sister ship Isle of Islay.  The ceremony program started with the speeches of Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd's CEO Kevin Hobbs and Cemre Shipyard Project Manager of CMAL vessels Recep Portakal. Councilor Uisdean Robertson honored us by pressing the button to begin the steel cutting and building process of the 3rd vessel. The ceremony program came to an end with the successful placement of the 3rd vessel's keel on the slipway. The addition of the new ships will enhance the capacity for vehicles and freight on the Islay routes by nearly 40%, while also reducing emissions and strengthening the overall resilience of the fleet. https://www.cemreshipyard.com/en/news/two-more-milestones-achieved-for-cmal-ferries

To register your *OFFICIAL* vote for the two new Islay ferries visit the website below: https://www.cmassets.co.uk/name-new-islay-vessels/ "Voting is now open to help us name the two new vessels to serve Islay and Jura. Below is a shortlist of names to choose from, each of which has ties to the landscape and history of Islay and Jura: Isle of Islay—the southernmost island of the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. Pioneer—a ferry built in 1974 serving West Loch Tarbert and Port Ellen on Islay. She was the longest vessel to operate this far up the loch. Loch Gruinart—a sea loch on the north coast of Islay. Loch Indaal—a sea loch south of Loch Gruinart, and inspiration for the folk song “The Lights of Lochindaal” by Iain Simpson. Laggan Bay—home to ‘The Big Strand’, a five-mile-long beach, located on the southeast entrance to Loch Indaal. Machir Bay—a small bay on the west coast of Islay.

From Transport Scotland: The Scottish Government has provided funding for an additional ferry to improve resilience on the Clyde and Hebrides network. The MV Alfred will join the CalMac fleet on a nine month time charter after an agreement was reached with Pentland Ferries. Scottish Government investment of around £9 million will cover berthing dues, fuel, commercial charter rate and other costs. CalMac will engage with communities and confirm the details of her deployment in due course. Minister for Transport Jenny Gilruth said: “I’m pleased to announce an agreement has been reached with Pentland Ferries to charter the MV Alfred, bringing improved resilience to the Clyde and Hebrides ferry network. This is a key step in our longer term commitment to retain a fully crewed vessel in the fleet for this purpose, as set out in the draft islands Connectivity Plan.  “The Scottish Government is committed to improving the lifeline ferry fleet and better meeting the needs of island communities. Since May 2021, we have bought and deployed an additional vessel in the MV Loch Frisa, chartered the MV Arrow and now the MV Alfred to provide additional capacity, commissioned four new vessels and progressed investment to improve key ports and harbours.” Robbie Drummond, CalMac’s Chief Executive, said: “We are delighted that MV Alfred will be joining the CalMac fleet, her addition will provide much-needed resilience.    “While her design means that she can only operate to some ports, having this extra vessel will help support the rest of the fleet during times of annual maintenance or disruption.” https://www.transport.gov.scot/news/mv-alfred-charter/
