In 1997 a loch class was launched from the Buckie Shipyard Ltd. The vessel was unnamed initially but was named Loch Aline two weeks later. Shortly afterwards she was renamed as her original choice was unavailable and the newest addition to the Calmac fleet became Loch Alainn – the Gaelic version of her previous name.
