In 1978 the base for CalMac's sailings from the mainland to Islay was moved three miles from West Loch Tarbert to Kennacraig. The pier here had been especially extended to accommodate Pioneer. She operated from this port to Port Ellen (Islay), and during the 70’s, rival private operator Western Ferries was covering sailings to Port Askaig.
